What Do You Think?

What does it mean to be mature?
maturitynoun
1. The period of time in your life after your physical growth has stopped and you are fully developed [syn: adulthood]
That is the definition I got from the online dictionary and I agree with it to an extent, although my thoughts are a little more specific than the definition.
I also think that society has developed its own requirements for maturity whether it being the time you stop pulling that little girls pigtails or finally put away that blankie you've been lugging around for years.
Those things are very obvious immature traits but maturity goes beyond that. Most high school students don't realize being childish goes beyond holding on to childhood toys. Some of the things I see everyday in my highschool that are very irritating when these people claim to have achieved maturity is
1) Throwing a fit over minute topics and never accepting it when you're wrong
2) Degrading or making fun of people in front of or behind people's backs
If you do this I think you should get over the fact that not everyone is the same and you should just accept someone for who they are because they aren't going to be anyone else
There are numerous other ways to act immature. What do you think it takes to become a real "adult"?
Are most adults in society today even mature themselves? Can people who are considered children act like "adults"?

  2. Ya, I think that once you see the world less from the point of "how does this effect me" than you're well on your way. Think about it: that must be what causes low self esteem, self-destructive behavior, and wanting to cut other people down. You think what they're doing is somehow about you when you're a child (everyone does) but then when you mature that decreases. Think of freshman in the hallways getting mad at a group of talking people who say their name because they think they're saying something about them and that it really matters. Know what I'm saying?
